She is aging, and there is no one to take care of Charley after she is gone...and there is his Birthrite to consider. Their home has passed from one Aycock to the next for generations. Birthrite (2008) Reviews

I just saw this movie. I watched it because it was set in Arkansas near where I grew up. As usual the scenery of Arkansas was beautiful but the typical stereotype of the dumb backwoods family came out. It would be nice to see this attachment to Arkansas cease to exist. Take a real look at Arkansas and anyone will see that it is a beautiful state with intelligent people and not full of backwoods moonshiners. This movie was pretty bad. The actors were dry and bland. No one had any emotion in their acting except Alex Moody. He played a good "Charley, the backwoods retard". The plot was boring and stupid. I can give the movie one good rating....Megan Dowd was a very pretty girl and that made the movie worth watching.
worst film of all time
I've seen a LOT o bad movies in my time, but THIS? Quite easily THE worst film I've ever seen. I tend to read the comment given by IMDb and then decide whether or not to d/load, and its very rare i'm disappointed, but what is rfiles on? Not to be missed? The end certainly isn't, just to be sure its finally over. I watched it all out of a fascinated curiosity, i honestly couldn't believe what i was seeing. Whoever made this film were serious, thats the worst part, if it was meant to be tongue in cheek or a bit slap dash on purpose you could give em a bit of license, you can tell though, they thought people would like it. Its honestly like a couple of in-bred day release stoners have made it in a day, its EASILY the worst acting I've ever seen. PLEASE someone else watch this film and leave a comment so i can prove to myself im not going mad.
True Assessment
OK, I have read EVERY word of EVERY posting and EVERY Review I could find on this movie after watching the entire production. -- Honestly this is NOT a waste of time movie. It is NOT however a "Good" movie -- the acting is just not there (believability), I do however agree that the cinematography is very good. Not one of the actors actually made me feel they were comfortable with their rolls and each had to struggle to acquire their feel.... I only WATCH movies online -- and do NOT download them, but I do give my HONEST opinion of a movie -- so the pirating doesn't pertain to me. Once again -- the movie is NOT a waste of time -- but not "Good". I gave it a 3 because it actually has some merit and they do not have a 3.5. I lived in Arkansas for a very long time, and do today, graduated from ASU in '78. It is that beautiful of a place, but the people are NOT that STUPID. There are many intelligent individuals in Arkansas. I did however enjoy the part of -- "Charley" as played by Alex Moody. His was probably the ONLY believable character in the film.
psychological thriller
The photography is beautiful. Mark Maness captures the beauty and the danger of the Arkansas river-bottoms. Alex Moody gives a brilliant performance as Charlie, a man child raised in poverty with little education. His world revolves around his widowed mother (Linda Bowling) who controls his every thought and action. Linda steals the movie with her caustic performance of a woman who seems to have slipped slightly over the edge of sanity. Into their world comes Elizabeth, played by Megan Dowd. Elizabeth finds herself a captive with only two options: marry Charlie or die. Randal Files wrote a riveting script that is punctuated by an incredible score by Brian Pitman. This is a movie that you don't want to miss.
Awful in All Departments
No siljwood you are not going mad, this truly is an awful film. This isn't a case of straight to video, more like straight to landfill. The acting is well below par, although Megan and Brent Dowd at least change the tone of their voices once in a while to put some attempts at acting in, the rest of the cast all speak in the same monotones whether they are trying to be kind or nasty. It's just all so flat and doesn't work. There is no expression whatsoever in any of the acting. The tension doesn't build at all and the violent scenes are not convincing in the least, when momma or Charlie hit out with lumps of wood they may as well be using lumps of sugar for all the effort they put into it, and momma was about as scary as Fred Flintstone. I really wanted this to be an under-rated little gem and give it a good write up, unfortunately the only good thing I can say about it was the scenery was nice. People may have put a lot of hard work into this for little or no pay but I can think of many that would do a better acting job for nothing. I sincerely wish Mark well with his next venture and hope to be able to give him more positive feedback, he seems a decent enough bloke just wanting honest opinions and sounds like he is willing to listen to honest constructive comments on his work.
