  • Good old gumshoe, in a new style

The image that I had in my mind of Byomkesh was that of Uttam Kumar in Chiriakhana, by no standards a good film, and of subsequent TV series played competently by Rajit Kapur. In essence a mild mannered, sharp witted, quintessential Bengali "Bhodrolok" with a quite observant assistant cum scribe friend Ajit. The new Byomkesh is different in flavor, as much as the new Sherlock Holmes played by Robert Downey Jr is different from the classical Jeremy Brett edition. The good news is that, as no set standards have yet been set for Byomkesh, one would not have problems with accepting the new one. Whether Anjan Dutta has succeeded in setting a standard is for you to judge, but in my opinion it is a fair attempt but not quite there, but can definitely be improved in the next film ( hear that it would be a trilogy) Abir Chatterjee, playing Byomkesh does a good job, as does Sashwata playing Ajit. The style is a little brash, street smart. The script is faithful to the original story - so far so good - but where the film suffers a bit is in the fact that it is shot a bit like a tele-film. The cinematography is sharp as is the lighting, which adds to the movie. However, possibly due to practical consideration ( low budget) , the film had to be shot as a three chamber drama with a few outdoor shot of a non-descript gully masquerading as 50's Calcutta, and three burning tires as riots, which leads to a claustrophobic feeling. As a period film Byomkesh disappoints. In fairness, it is a good watchable film with a solid storyline, competently acted, directed and edited. Definitely, worth a watch and I will keep a watch for the next Byomkesh. 7/10

  • A Plausible effort for the Desi Detective !

    victishonor2015-04-09

I literally googled Dibakar banerjee the moment i stepped outside the cinema hall . Although, I never notice the direction part in a movie ,i look for the acting ,the script ,songs at times but never the direction part . It isn't because i choose to ignore that part but its mostly because majority Bollywood directors are not innovating on the execution part of a script . Expensive sets are made , random camera angles are set to increase the intensity of the scene , a playback music adds to the scene , but that's nothing new! Its like everyone is doing the same thing . Well , Not in this case , Dibakar banerjee creates a beautifully defined Calcutta from the 1940's . From the very first scene of the movie you began realizing that how well the timeline has been executed to match the script of the story . Applauds to the director . Sushant rajput , sticks to the character of Byomkesh Bakshi in a plausible manner . Well here is the thing , if you have by chance watched the TV series Byomkesh bakshi , and are expecting the movie to be like it only , then you cannot be more wrong . Dibakar knows the fact very well that people might expect something similar to the TV Series , but he doesn't want that , He creates a completely different Byomkesh bakshi which is far better than that in the TV Series . Also , It is advisable to flush all the memory of Sherlock Holmes related TV Series & Movies before entering the theater . Trust me , it is only then you will be able to enjoy the movie completely . Unlike Sherlock (who is able to crack 50% of the case just by looking at the crime scene) , our desi detective has more of the human factor in him . He gets confused , He is deceived , He falls for the baits , He make mistakes , but that's the whole point of it & i don't think no one else could have played that role better than Sushant , Its a new role and we needed a newcomer for it . Well in spite of all the good things in the movie , there are certain things where the movie lags . For some of the scenes i really wished that i could rewind it all over again to understand what just happened & i am sure that i am not the only one who wished for it . Some scenes get messy and you have to put your brains in to understand what just happened . If you missed the scene or were not able to understand it , don't worry , our desi detective will conclude the story in the end and the scene would be explained . Another thing where this movie lags behind (Spoiler Alert) is that the antagonist is alive in the end . Nobody wants the bad guy to live in the end of the movie , Kill that bastard already , he created all the mess ! . Unfortunately that doesn't happens and that's the part where we get that Dibakar Banerjee has a second part lined up or at least he is thinking about one . All in all , the movie is not the kind you should miss . Watch Byomkesh Bakshi for the beautifully visualized Calcutta of the 1940's , for a well written script with similar execution and for the brilliant acting done by Sushant Singh Rajput . 3.5/5
