Is Hollywood as impenetrable as notoriously thought? Indie filmmakers, Haylar Garcia, Darcy Grabowski and Scott Baxendale spent two and a half years finding out. In 2004 they completed a bio-script based on the colorful life of Baxendale as a celebrity guitar builder and musician turned vicious criminal. Longing to do the story justice they dreamed of attaching a big star, and even more importantly a star who could actually play guitar. It wasn't long before their sights became transfixed on ex-musician turned actor Johnny Depp, who at the time was just off a career-catapulting role as Captain Jack in the first Pirates film. Do It for Johnny (2007) Reviews
Engaging, Entertaining and Inspirational
I lost count of the number of documentaries I have seen a long time ago. I love the genre. DIFJ is among the best I ever seen. It captures your heart with the pure enthusiasm of this amazing team on their seemingly impossible quest. Full of "almost" moments, laugh out loud gaffes, honest disappointments and heartwarming victories, the movie does what so many fail to do: It keeps you engaged and invested from beginning to end. The filmmakers take their quest seriously, but they don't take themselves too seriously. Great editing, perfect music, interesting characters and a wonderful opening title sequence. Without giving anything away I want to point out that what impressed me most about this group of people was their character. Not only did they persevere beyond any reasonable expectation, they ALWAYS took the high road when dealing with the people they encountered, both in and out of the Hollywood establishment. Even when those that were full of their own sense of power belittled them, they smiled, thanked them for their time and moved on. That is a rare quality. I expect to hear more from these folks.
An inspiring independent film with a message of never giving up on your dreams.
I had the honor of watching the germ of an idea turn into a completed piece of work. I shared the excitement of each forward step this talented group achieved and felt the pain of each setback. This being said, The documentary do it for johnny truly exhibits the roller-coaster ride taken by Haylar Garcia and Darcy Grabowski. Haylar's compilation of the demanding quest is masterfully executed with humorous segues. As Production Manager, Darcy's unending devotion and ingenuity are inspiring. This documentary made me laugh and cry. I cried with empathy and with pride. I laughed with pure joy at the group's triumphs. The group's perseverance and dedication are to be admired. The directing and editing are both brilliant and witty. I recommend this documentary to all for its message of never giving up on your dreams.
