Gettysburg and Stories of Valor: Civil War Minutes III (2004) Reviews

  • An excellent collection of battlefield stories drawn from firsthand accounts

I have to agree with the only other review on here right now - this is an excellent documentary on the U.S. Civil War. It is what I consider to be an old fashioned documentary, meaning that it doesn't rely on historians sharing their expertise or re-enactments performed by modern enthusiasts. This program sticks to modern color shots of the Gettysburg battlefield as it is now, which is possible because it hasn't been built up or overrun by progress, and sketches or actual photographs from the period. And of course it features a single narrator, smoothly done by Keith Carradine. I am not saying that either style of documentary is better; they are both fine when they are well done. This documentary series is called Civil War Minutes, reflecting the fact that this isn't a description of the entire battle, but rather a collection of vignettes, stories drawn from written accounts of the time. As a long time reader and viewer of all things U.S. Civil War, several of the stories are familiar to me, but many are not, or else they are related in more detail than I have heard before. It ends with a brief account of Abraham Lincoln's visit to give the Gettysburg Address, with Carradine repeating the 272 word speech. I wouldn't be surprised if this documentary is heavily used in schools to study the battle, as it seems to be a balanced and interesting account.

  • A great documentary.

This is a great documentary. It mixes interesting stories with primary historical documents (photos, accounts, art) and beautiful HD-shot live footage. The stories are beautifully narrated by Keith Carradine. Carradine adds drama to the story. The live footage is beautifully shot. I often use this disk as a demo for picture quality on my high-definition television. The nature shots are beautifully composed. The viewer truly gets a feel for what it is like to be in Ghettysburg. Some of my favorite stories involve the medicine of the time. Every story is a mini history lesson. This DVD is an enjoyable way to learn about our nation's past.
