Ghosted (2009) Reviews

  • A very curious lesbian love story set in Germany and Taiwan

Gosh, not sure what to say about this movie. Sophie is a German lass who fancies Asian woman who work in her industry and she uses them it seems to achieve professional work in Taiwan while at the same time seducing them. Ay.Ling is one such taiwanese lady who falls for Sophies charms but it seems Sophie has a different agenda, whatever that is and when something happens to Ay.Ling, another taiwanese beauty comes into her web to investigate what happened to the previous girl. A strange and quirky mystery unfolds around lesbian love. Actually its not a bad movie, the story needs more work and the ending leaves us wondering but the sex scenes between the women are modest and sensitive. Some nice shots of Taiwan and Hamburg for that matter; are there really that many Chinese/taiwanese in Hamburg? gosh! Not a priority movie, even for lesbians, but certainly watchable and the acting is of an acceptable level. Might wonder though what was the connection between Ay Ling and the second Taiwanese girl .....

  • A wonderful mystery, where East meets West.

Ghosted is a mystery set in Hamburg and Taipeh, surrounding the mysterious death of a Taiwanese woman named Ai-ling Chen, in which her German lover, Sophie Schmitt, is grieving over. The mystery is set during the Ghost Month, celebrated in Taiwan. There is a belief that during the 7th month of the year, ghosts gain access to the the world of the living. On the 15th day of the month, the Ghost Festival is held, representing the connection between the living and the dead. Offerings and rituals are performed to appease the wandering souls or to guide them back to where they belong, like offering food and burning money. Sophie is an artist who falls in love with Ai-Ling, who had moved to Hamburg to gain more information about her father. One day, Ai-ling mysteriously dies. Sophie creates an art installation dedicated to Ai-ling. At her exhibit opening in Taiwan, she meets a Taiwanese journalist, who wants to interview her. Sophie tells her that she does not do interviews; however, she's persistent and soon shows up in Hamburg. As the story unfolds, not everything is as it seems. This is a wonderful mystery. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed it, I wish there were more twists and turns, with a shocking ending.

  • A cross-cultural lesbian ghost story

Is this a perfect movie? No. But is a great whatever-it-is. Ghost stories are all about memory. (Just as zombie flicks are about death, Frankenstein is about overreaching man/science, vampires are about gluttony (sexual and otherwise), and werewolves about our animal drives.) This is an awesome ghost story. I enjoyed it immensely. I hope Monika Treut has another one in her. We see the German writer haunted by the memory of her deceased lover, even as another woman (seems) to take her place. In reality, the restless Asian spirit is simply sought by the German lady simply to place her to rest. "Dream Boy" was a gay (male), Southern ghost story. "Ghosted" is a Euro-Chinese lesbian version. They both rock, and I enjoyed them both immensely.
