Heaven Sent (2016) Reviews

  • On the verge of divorce or enjoy sentimental family films? This one is "Heaven Sent"!

    DavidMovieReview2016-12-17

This film is surprising for the acting talent displayed. The three lead characters as well as the two supporting male characters are clearly talented. Mallory reminds me of the fun of watching Shirley Temple. No singing involved, but she is genuine and brings the same childlike glee to her acting. Christian Kane does very well as a rough edged creative type whose game has lost some of its polish over the years. Marley Shelton is great at acting both hot and cold in her relationships, a struggle for many modern business women. I liked her character more and more throughout the film, and her heart is the true focus of the film. Ernie Hudson was pitch perfect in his delivery, even though his role was relatively small . Sean Miller is decent, although the role written for him was somewhat two- dimensional and definitely predictable. Yes, the script is formulaic. Classic conflicts arise. You may even guess some of the twists in the plot. But the movie gives you the sense that it needs to be watched. Hopefully it will give some couples new hope and help them to avoid the devastation of divorce if they pay attention to the film's lessons. If not, they'll find out the hard way, which we see demonstrated within the film. But the movie will serve as good medicine for those who will hear the message and bring more happiness to them and their children. Change like that would truly be "Heaven Sent."

  • Formula Film At Its Best

    Renie19742016-12-06

THE FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS SLIGHT SPOILERS, BUT NOTHING MAJOR. IF YOU WANT NOTHING SPOILED FOR YOU, PLEASE DON'T READ. I don't have cable TV, so I went to a friend's house to watch "Heaven Sent." I have never watched a Lifetime movie, ever. It's not my thing. Even if I had cable, I wouldn't watch the channel. The one and only reason I watched this film was it's star, Christian Kane. Known more for his action roles (as Eliot Spencer in "Leverage" and currently as Jake Stone on TNT's "The Librarians,")it's always nice to see him play a dramatic and slightly comedic role (he's really good at physical comedy, a gift I hope we get to see more of in future projects.) Christian plays Billy Taylor, and Marley Shelton plays his wife, Maire. Married for 9 years, she wants a divorce, and he doesn't. Maire says a prayer, wanting Billy to let go, and Billy prays that she'll change her mind. Turns out, someone is listening to their prayers. Enter little Taylor (played by newcomer Mallory James Mahoney,) a little girl who decides to take matters into her own hands. She appears at their house, out of nowhere, startling both Billy & Maire. As soon as they realize that only they can see her, they soon learn that she is, in fact, an angel who ran away from Heaven, and she really wants to call them 'mommy & daddy.' (If you're like me, you will have figured out who Taylor really is less than 30 minutes into the movie, but if not, then it'll be a major hankie moment for you.) She uses her charm and even a bit of magic to keep the divorce papers at bay, and to try and get Billy & Maire to re-connect with each other and fall in love again. This is a formula film, through and through. Slightly hokey in its comedic efforts and a little over the top with the sweet moments, but none of it matters. We get Christian Kane at his best so far, being a doting dad to a little girl who's cuteness rivals that of any child actor I've seen as of late. Perfectly cast as Taylor, Mallory James Mahoney brings a sweetness, innocence, and even a bit of sneakiness to the role. Even at her young age, she is able to convey the wisdom that an angel from Heaven would probably have. As Maire, Marley Shelton does a good job of portraying a workaholic woman who is all too ready to end her marriage, even though we get glimpses that it may not be what she really wants. She becomes very attached to Taylor and seems to relish acting the part of and being called 'mommy." As Billy, Christian Kane is perfect as the man who desperately wants to save his marriage and who is also trying to keep Christmas alive in his home and his heart, despite the many pitfalls (one literal) along the way. His scenes with Taylor, especially, are among the sweetest. Director Michael Landon, Jr. does a nice job of conveying a cozy, small town atmosphere in Boulder, Colorado during the holidays. The story moves along at a good pace and doesn't really slack too much, but the scenes with Maire and her co-worker and possible new love Sean Miller (played by Ryan McPartlin) were slightly tedious to watch (but that's just me; if I had my druthers, Christian Kane would be in every single scene in the film.) A little plot twist that most people will see coming a mile away adds to the sappy factor, but it doesn't matter. "Heaven Sent" is a precious film that honestly made me fall in love with Christian Kane all over again (especially in the scene where we hear him singing to Taylor; Kane is an accomplished musician and has a beautiful voice; please check out his music on You Tube, or go to www.christiankane.com to buy his CDs if any are left; his fans, the Kaniacs, make re-stocking Kane merchandise a constant priority.) "Heaven Sent" is a perfect little gem of a film that will get you in the holiday spirit, renew your faith, and turn you into a faithful Kaniac. This one is destined to be a Christmas classic.

  • Sweet and Spicy Little Angel!

    LuLuBelleKy2016-12-10

It's Christmas time and Maire and Billy Taylor have been married 9 years, but their marriage has gone by the wayside, and Maire has filed for a divorce, but Billy does not want it. Enter one sweet, and precocious (but oh, so intelligent and witty!) little angel, Taylor! The couple is immediately smitten by this little one, as the audience will be too! (Mallory James Mahoney is AH-MAZING). Maire and Billy are both in tailspin mode, as this little angel is opening their eyes to so many little things that add up to the big things in life. They begin to see each other in a new light, all because of little Taylor. So many Christmas movies have the same old plot again and again, and yet, this one broke that mold! (I should've known it was a Michael Landon, Jr movie.) Don't miss this GEM. No trailer can do justice to the movie. Christian Kane, and Marley Shelton have phenomenal on screen chemistry, (and he's soooo cute and funny in this movie!!). Ernie Hudson, who plays Donatello was fantastic too! I'm getting teary eyed writing about how touching and sweet this movie is... So you're just going to have to see for yourself.❤️

  • This Movie Works - Top of its Class

    dial911book2017-01-14

We live in a movie age that prizes high power special effects and depicts countless criminal acts from theft to robbery to torture to murder to mass murder. So the non-vicious, non-violent movies that are made can seem tame, maybe boring. Don't let the insanity of evil and violence fill your every entertainment moment. Try a movie that explores the human condition played out in normal lives, one that explores the spiritual dimensions, one that makes you think and laugh and cry a little, too. Wife and I were gripped and held by this movie, start to finish. Others here have written about the plot and the strengths of the acting and directing -- and we agree with those positive reviews. Heaven Sent is a family-friendly movie that blends some levity with serious life challenges, triggering something deeper in the process. This movie ranks at the top of movies among the Lifetime and Hallmark channel offerings, and in our view, is nearly as good a film as Family Man. We'll watch it every year from here on.

  • This Movie was Heaven Sent- Well Done

    gehewe2017-12-29

I only rate about 10% of the movies a 10 and this one gets it. We have a fantasy story with a bit of a surprise at the end. Story keeps you engaged until the end. The story allows for some great humor and emotion. Such as the divorce papers never getting signed. Loved the mirror scenes. We have 3 main characters with no real distractions. Christian Kane plays the husband Billy, Marley Shelton plays the wife Maire and and the little girl Taylor is adorable. The Billy character really made the story. It was played with some real emotion and was not boring. Maire is well done and of course the little girl was adorable. No boring parts just a good fun story. I would enjoy watching again.
