  • A Slice of Life

Kaikohe Demolition is a wonderful documentary. It showcases rural life in New Zealand. Moreso it shows a slice of life of how Maori communities of a particular socio-economic status live. Whether it is favored or not, this do-co shows the novelties and enjoyment of life in Kaikohe, Northland, New Zealand. This is a must see and certainly deserves recognition. Congrats and thanks to the director for sharing this with us. Ben Haretuku, Uncle Bim and Zielensky all provide an inspiring insight into the everyday life of a rural community. And even though one may face challenges set down by circumstance, its just all a part of what revolves around the centerpiece... the demolition derby. Something which is a real credit to the community of Kaikohe. Kaikohe, population 3000, the administrative and business heart of the central Northland farming community. Recently has taken a backseat to the tourism-heavy Bay of Islands and the growing township of Kerikeri. Even though Kaikohe has been surpassed in development by the favored Bay of Islands, there are some things that can bring this town to the forefront of popularity. Having featured negatively in world headlines for children attacking Santa for running out of candy. Kaikohe Demolition is set to enhance the image of this awesome and potential-filled township.

just a note to say how much I enjoyed the film. i attended the world premiere at the New Zealand Film Festival a year ago and will never forget that. the local brass band from Kaikohe was there to play before the screening! I was especially moved by the sense of pride and ownership of the film that was evident in the film's subjects - Uncle Bimm, Ben etc. (they spoke afterwards.) It is a fantastic achievement on Habichts part, it shows incredible empathy and trust for each other that I'm sure would make many doco makers envious. While the film is specific in following the events around Kaikohe's Derby, it also revealed a part of NZ society that is seldom portrayed in a positive light if at all. I hope the film travels far and wide, it deserves it!
