Morgana (2012) Reviews

  • Boooooring, slow, dull, poor acting

A Mexican movie produced by Televisa, with poor story, and poor cast. It was slow, boring, dull and poorly acted. I was not expecting something fair nor outstanding because good horror movies are hard to find in Mexico. Some of the characters were overacted and their dialogs were poorly connected with the whole story. The movie was a low-budget film lacking of good effects. The movie tells the same story as in old wrestlers-horror movies, starring "El Santo". It reminded me too Mexican soup operas, which all of them tell the same story. Do not waste your time and money. Viewers are misguided to the box office thinking that horror productions have been already improved in Mexico, which is not true. On the contrary, they have worsened and have not taken advantage of new technology and they certainly are not using new and fresh stories from new talents.

The reviews on Netflix are great for this film. So I gave it a try. I love ghost stories, hate the sadistic torture Saw type films. What a waste of a half hour. I had to turn it off. The acting is mediocre, but the direction is so bad, that I wondered what it could have looked like with a better director. The guy actually sets this movie up to look like I'm watching a play. Say, there is a scene where a guy is trying to get the girl to talk to him, she walks away from him and tells him to leave her alone, and the director actually films the scene as if it were filmed on stage. We see the girl walking away angry, and she suddenly stops at her mark, for no reason. And waits for the guy to get there so they can argue some more. This happened multiple times in the first half hour. Another argument where the girl is on the patio telling the guy to leave her alone and yet she doesn't move. Just stands there. Then the aunt, talking to the friend , facing the camera, and not the person she is talking to , who is standing there with a huge smile on her face in the back ground , as the aunt tells her how awful her friend is doing. It's filmed like a soap opera in parts. With bad acting. I had to turn it off at the part where the girl is chopping limes and the windows open and the breeze comes in and we focus a close up on her bulging eyes, and then we see her grab a butcher knife and hold it to her wrist with these bulging eyes, and shaking , because the breeze is catching her hair. Then she holds the knife there for like 2 minutes, doing nothing and slams it down. Good bye. It was utterly ridiculous. I would expect this as a high school admission in a film contest.

  • Not for gore and screaming lovers

This movie is great, but not suitable for fans of blood pools, piles of dismembered bodies, endless screaming, and crazy editing. If you watch 'Morgana' you have to think a little, and also be capable to enjoy its visual richness. Horror here is subtle. If you do not speak Spanish, you will miss a lot about the story; anyway, if you like excellent cinematography you could give it a try. Cinematography and settings are atmospheric and beautiful. 'Morgana' has nothing to do with Santo films or with soap (not soup) operas. It was not produced by Televisa, but by don Gonzalo Elvira, a movie producer that knows his trade; just imagine, his family has been making successful films since the late 1930s. Ramón Obón, the writer and director has a long experience in writing horror screenplays. In this movie, his references to Carlos Enrique Taboada's horror movies are frequent and suitable to the story. After watching 'Morgana' in TV, I will definitely buy the DVD.
