Mystery Woman: Sing Me a Murder (2005) Reviews

  • Great Family Show

    gingerschneider2006-08-24

Thank you Kraft and Hallmark for supporting this Show. It is about time there is a decent Family Murder Mystery Series. I only hope that they continue to make more. It is one of favorite show on TV. We really enjoy mysteries and this one is perfect for everyone to try and solve. Our kids as well as ourselves loved it. The plot was very good and the acting is great. Filbe and Samantha are our favorite characters. They always pick such good actors from the past for their story line. I always recognize someone. Mystery Woman Wild West is also very good. Our favorite so far is Murder Mystery Weekend. I cannot say enough good things about the Mystery Woman Shows. Hope you enjoy it too. Thank you.

  • Slow moving entry in the Mystery Woman series

Hallmark Channel is targeting the baby boomers and older crowd with its Mystery Movie series. Mystery Woman, one of the shows included in the series, is about a bookstore owner (Kellie Martin) who is constantly being embroiled in real-life murders. Sing Me a Murder concerned a '60s and '70s folk song trio on the comeback trail. You can't get more baby boomer than that. Mystery Woman is mildly entertaining but doesn't have much pep to it. The pace is slow and the directing pedantic. Clarence Williams III's character comes off as dull. Kellie Martin, who is a very good actress, really doesn't have much to do. We hear about all the exciting events that Mystery Woman has at her store, but in this episode, we didn't get to see any of them. We don't see many customers either. David Naughton, one of the guest stars in Sing Me a Murder, is a long way from "I'm a Pepper" - can it really be that many years since I've seen him? I didn't recognize him at first. It is certainly fun to see Williams, Martin, and various old-timers. I just wish they had a little more energy.

  • Gets better after a rubbish start but is still only so-so anaemic fare

The death of one of his former colleagues peacefully while fishing makes Philby feel like his death was a loss to the "business" and sets out to engage again with his former profession – advising on a series of high-tech bank robberies. Meanwhile Samantha agrees to allow a folk group on a comeback/charity tour to use her shop and garden as a venue. However when the band's manager is found murdered, Samantha finds herself personally invested enough in the band to get involved in the investigation – especially when Chief Connors seems content to go for the easiest answers. It speaks volume about the lazy part of my character I think, but whenever I see these TVM daytime mystery things come on TV part of me does want to watch them. I know that I shouldn't encourage them but sometimes the easy tone, comforting feel and twisty but unchallenging plots make for pleasurable and easy viewing. With Mystery Woman I have enjoyed some of them on this basis and, mostly, Sing Me a Murder is just more of the same. After a terrible setup the film gets going and it blands its way across the running time without any great effort or flair. In doing this it just about provides entertainment in the way that soft music does – it doesn't do anything for you other than soothing and providing a background. Of course I understand those that would say that something tasteless and bland is not worth the time and generally I do agree. The series, and this film in particular, are very soft and harmless and it is only when in the most undemanding mood that you can watch it. Sing Me A Murder is contrived and all too convenient in the plotting but it does have a gentle pace to it and those that like the other films in the series will find this to be more of the same. Martin is pretty and non-threatening without an inch of sexuality about her – thus perfect for daytime TV. Williams is terrible here – flicking a switch between emotions unconvincingly and never making a character so much as just doing what the scene requires. Siemaszko is endlessly bland and seems happy with it. Sander does his usual grumpy character to solid effect. This is far from a good film but it is an OK Mystery Woman film. Watch it if you are looking for something just to doze in front of as this is inoffensive and bland but if you want anything more than that then this will only annoy and disappoint with its banality.

  • Peter, Paul, and Murder

Sing Me A Murder has Kellie Martin and Clarence Williams,III hosting a reunion benefit concert at their store. The reunion is of a folk song group from the 60s one much like Peter,Paul&Mary. The three in the group are David Naughton, John Getz, and Ellen Greene. Greene and Naughton are married to each other. Their promoter Brad Rowe comes in to look at the venue, but later is stabbed to death in his motel room. This time police chief Casey Sander is even more bad tempered than usual. Kellie Martin is intrinsically involved in this one up to her eyebrows from the start. Some strange things happen wherever the group performs. And there's a nasty romantic triangle within the group. I have to say I picked the perpetrator wrong here, always the sign of a good mystery. See if you do too.

  • Very Disappointing

    whpratt12006-01-10

This was a Hallmark TV presentation and the entire story was really the same old thing and the actors all performed like a High School drama class. The plot of the story went around and around in circles and I started to fall asleep during some of the worst parts. The reason for murdering some one was way out and the police looked like they were bored to death to even try to catch the criminal. I guess it is hard to write a different murder mystery, but this film was cut up into pieces and made no sense at all, from beginning to end. IT is quite possible other series have been an improvement, but I am not going to waste my time to find out!
