So sad but more frustrating
This movie mirrors 'Ditto" in story. On the surface this sci-fi Asian romance is about two attractive college students connecting via a ham radio, only living 23 years apart. I feel the real undercurrent of the storyline is about taking chances, and the consequences of regret (lost opportunities for not taking that chance). The end is very frustrating however and could have been handled differently. The last few minutes behavior was out of character for the main actor, and you can relate with the female lead Gigi Leung. This movie will leave you thinking, and wishing, and wondering. This movie makes you think as well as feel for the two leads. I recommend it!
there's a weakness somewhere in this plot
Initially the plot seems really interesting but there's something not quite right about it. This is made especially frustrating by the ending when the male lead finds but does not talk to the female lead or even see her face. It seems the story is left incomplete because there is no conclusive exchange between the two main characters. The plot had the makings of a fascinating tale and perhaps under different direction and writing this might have been achieved. The film is still worth a watch but just be ready for an ending that leaves you up in the air a bit. The acting is fine and I am always amused by the way Asian actresses use their eyes and facial expressions so cleverly. It's something that Western actresses don't seem to do much.
and another thing..
the movie also is about destiny and whether or not fate can be changed if we know the ultimate result of the choices we make. Even though the female lead knew what was going to happen, she relented and perhaps even hastened the outcome by turning a cold shoulder to her best friend and the one she admired, instead of trying a different tact to change the outcome (future). One thing I don't understand is why did the male lead seem so dejected after learning her decision that the one she admired would not work out? I mean after all, if she did pursue him and was successful, he would have a different mother. Whats exactly to be upset about? And why did he not do something when he actually encountered her in the university? And can we interpret by the way she moped down the hall that her life turned out bad/sad? The comment was dropped in the movie that she changed universities when the male lead entered the same college; obviously alluding to the fact she was keeping track of him, even after 23 years had passed since he last talked to her. I need answers people!
