Nick appears in his apartment - confused and disoriented. He discovers he can't move anything. He can't open the medicine cabinet, can't pick up a Perrier bottle, can't even feed his fish! A naturally nervous person, Nick panics. Suddenly, a British glam-rock band bursts in the door. The band informs Nick that he is dead, and he's stuck in his apartment. To escape, he must learn all the valuable life lessons he ignored while he was alive. Then, he will be judged by God and sent either to Heaven or Hell - a jarring concept for an atheist. With the rock band serving as his modern-day Greek chorus, Nick must rely on Rex, the hot-headed, half-drunken lead singer as his spiritual guide to avoid the fiery pits of Hell. Further complicating matters is the new tenant, Beth. An evangelical Christian who is unaware that Nick and the other spirits are sharing the apartment with her, Beth is undergoing a harrowing transformation of her own. She just left her husband. She has no job. And her best ...

Starlight & Superfish (2010) Reviews

  • A good movie about getting into heaven

This is a thinking person's movie: The main character, Nick, must figure out how to pass the tests that will determine how he will spend eternity. But before he can do that, he needs to discover what the tests are, using clues provided in songs by his rock idol. The viewer, too, must figure out what the tests are, and what Nick must do to pass them. Hayes Hargrove did a good job as Nick, but at times was a little over the top. However, Matthew Jure as the rock star, Rex, was spot-on and fantastic; in fact all the band members were great, and so was the music. Wendi McClendon-Covey was good as Dawn, and I especially liked Carey Peters (Beth). She can say so much with just a look! I enjoyed "Starlight and Superfish" and expect to be thinking about it and talking about it for a long time.

  • Best rock-n-roll comedy of the year!

    mkooper12011-09-21

Saw this film at the Detroit Independent Film Festival and was really impressed and just blown away. The festival screening was sold-out and the audience was treated to a unique, quirky and engaging story. The rock soundtrack was a great tongue-in-cheek send-up of glam-rock bands. The Rex Redding character was both a hilarious caricature with his one-liners yet he possessed a deep complexity that was developed wonderfully throughout the film. Not surprised Matthew Jure won a Best Actor award. The final song "Say Goodbye" left not a dry eye in the audience at our screening. Funny, quirky, rock-and-roll comedy. Absolutely loved it! 10 out of 10! Best, Koop

  • Surprisingly awesome music

The musical numbers in this film were surprisingly awesome. Matthew Jure's performance as Rex, both as an actor and musician, make the film very enjoyable. "Say Goodbye" has all the elements of a solid gold rock/pop hit. I saw the film as an advance screening with a limited knowledge of the story line, and was pleasantly surprised with how easily I followed the relatively bizarre story line. The use of a pseudo-news broadcast to inform the protagonist of his death was extremely creative, and done really well. Loved the wrestling scene, too - such a common theme!
