I don't like being chased
The film opens with the stoning of a pregnant woman in northern India, and then picks up in Chicago where police officer Tony Salerno (Franco Steeves) lives with his Indian wife (Elizabeth Abraham) and their coming of age daughter plus one. The wife's nephews come to stay with them from India and death follows. The plot is explained at 53 minutes into the film for the bulk of us unfamiliar with Indian folklore. The film was slow. The jump scares were ineffective. Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
Very poor film-making
It's probably not the done thing to knock low budget efforts and I usually do not. I have seen plenty of films of this calibre that exhibit the usual clues that should warn you off but once I start something I am usually loathe to give up on it. The lousy sound, the poor to cringeworthy acting, WTF plot & unimpressive effects were tell-tale signs that this was another low budget film which would have me scoring it way below a basically alright, well intentioned, entertaining 8.0 and more towards the 3.0 I reserved for the disgusting "It's Alive" (2008 ) or the 1.0 for the "On The Buses" trilogy. The difference between this and so many other low budget films I have seen and scored slightly more highly without feeling the need to write a review is the irritation level. Throughout, the film-maker bombarded me with annoying noises, made worse by the atrocious sound quality. Almost every character had me telling them to shut up ( or worse ) at some point. 20 minutes in I felt that the actors deserved whatever fate was awaiting their characters. This was included with Amazon Prime membership. I think that Amazon should nevertheless be aiming much higher than this standard for it's "included in the price" content.
Yep, it's another dud
THE SACRIFICE is an indie horror effort made in Chicago. It's one of the slowest and most boring of all indies that I've watched, with a promising opening giving way to general wandering around inanity and a severe lack of focus. There's little dialogue here and it occasionally threatens to become interesting with snippets of folklore, but generally this has a lacklustre feeling to it.
