What Does 2013 Say? (2013) Reviews
Better back then, but still not good
"What Does 2013 Say?" is the title of the 2013 edition from five years ago when Youtube releases once a year a spotlight video that is supposed to summarize the website's highlights and most memorable influencers while also including some people famous beyond Youtube. Here, Jimmy Fallon would be one example. Overall, it runs for slightly under 6 minutes, but one minute of that is basically just listing the names and photos of all those who who are included at the very end. And I was a bit surprised there were actually more people in it this time that I came across. One would be PewDiePie, well everybody knows him, and back then he wasn't bigger than Youtube yet apparently. Epic Rap Battles of History is another and finally there is also Vitaly well he is not too amused by Youtube these days, but shows he's been big for a while that he was in it back then. Pretty much everybody really only shows up very briefly, so even if it is somebody you like, don't expect a minute of seeing him or so. 2 to 3 seconds is max. And there is a pretty nice mention at the end for a really young Youtuber who died from cancer earlier in 2013. Overall, i think this is better than the recent Youtube Best-ofs. Still i am a bit surprised by the high rating here. It is definitely not that good, but it's also not as bad as the 2017 and 2018 releases that may struggle with making it past 2 out of 10. So all in all, the 2013 edition gets a thumbs-down from me, but it is not a failure. Some decent songs used in here also elevate what you see. Oh yeah, director is Kai Hasson as always. That's all folks, lets hope 2019 can get at least as good as 2013 again, but somehow I doubt it.
Nostalgic
Although at the time of this review, 2013 was only a year ago, this short is an extremely well made, and leaves a somewhat nostalgic feel once you've finished watching it. The short is a collection of viral events and popular YouTubers thrown into one video. The video opens with Kid President discovering a YouTube-style rewind button. Upon pressing it, What Does the Fox Say begins playing, and we are thrown into the crazy world of YouTube, with various stars performing viral videos. Of course, it's not only WDTFS that is featured: many other viral songs are included. (Remember the Harlem Shake? No? Me neither.) The editing, audio mixing, cameos and cleverness of the short is what makes it great. There are a heck of a lot of YouTubers all making cameos, and the way they do it is incredible. I am very much looking forward to Rewind 2014. The 2011 version was awful, 2012 was a huge improvement; 2013 is the best yet. 2014 should be spectacular. I don't often give a 10/10, but this is an exception. A well deserved one, too.
